This weekend, there were La Liga games for two Tottenham Hotspur loanees sides, as Alejo Veliz’s RCD Espanyol hosted Celta Vigo, whilst Bryan Gil’s Girona faced the tricky test of Villarreal on the road.

Late drama in loanee's game to help rescue a good point

Firstly, on Saturday, Espanyol pulled off a huge win, as they overcame Celta Vigo with a 3-1 victory. Having taken a 2-0 lead, their visitors pulled one back via veteran Iago Aspas after 83 minutes, before a third goal in the 87th minute put the game to bed and secured the all important three points.

Despite a big win, it was not a great day individually for Veliz, who remained an unused substitute for the entire game. The striker who started the game scored, and the striker who came on for that player also scored - as Veliz' individual struggles of late were compounded.

Although this was a much needed and important win, Espanyol still remain in the relegation zone, although now only on goal difference, and they are two points off 14th place, and three points off 13th place. For a newly promoted side, they are generally making a decent fist of it.

As for Gil, he was named in the XI for Girona on Sunday, starting off the right hand side for this game. It was looking like a defeat for his side, having gone two goals down just a minute after the half-time break. However, Girona got one back midway through the second half, before a second goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time was enough to rescue an unlikely point for Michel's team.

Encouragingly, Gil played the full 90 minutes, despite Michel making all five of his alloted substitutions. Former Spurs defender Juan Foyth missed the game for Villarreal through injury. This draw leaves Girona in 7th place in La Liga, with 22 points from their 15 games so far this campaign.

Next up for Espanyol is a Copa Del Rey tie away to Union Deportiva Barbastro. In the previous round, Veliz had managed to score a hat-trick, as they beat lower league side San Tirso with a 4-0 victory. The game is on Tuesday, and kicks off at 20:00 GMT

Meanwhile, for Gil and Girona, they also have a game in the Copa Del Rey, as they face another lower league side in Logrones. That game is on Wednesday, and also kicks off at 20:00 GMT.
