22-year-old Widell has impressed in the Danish Superliga this season, scoring one goal and registering three assists, and he's attracting interest from a number of clubs, as per reports from Scandinavia.

Swansea had been looking to sign a midfielder in January regardless, but news of Matt Grimes' links with a move to Coventry City means that there could well be an extra emphasis on getting a deal over the line for a central midfielder.

Widell has played 51 games for Aalborg since joining the Danish outfit in 2023, and he's done enough to attract transfer interest this month from Swansea and from a number of unnamed clubs.

Tipsbladet have reported that Aalborg are in talks with a club over a move for the 22-year-old, while Swedish outlet Sportbladet have reported Swansea's desire to sign Widell before the transfer window shuts, with a 50 million kroner (£3.65 million) bid, which includes add-ons, being submitted for his services, and they could well have the finances to complete a deal should Grimes depart for Coventry City.

Swansea have been linked with a number of midfielders this month, with Football League World exclusively reporting that Luke Cundle was on the radar, while they've also been linked with Adam Phillips and Ethan Galbraith, as per Football Insider.

It's clear that Swansea want midfielders, and Widell is a player who has played in a range of positions this season, playing left-wing, right-wing, attacking midfield, central midfield and as a defensive midfielder, as per Transfermarkt.

This makes him an attractive signing for Swansea, and despite interest from elsewhere, Luke Williams will be looking to complete a deal for the 22-year-old.

Swansea City desperately need midfield reinforcements

With Grimes set to complete a move to Coventry, it leaves Swansea desperately short of options in midfield.

Williams would have just Jay Fulton, Joe Allen and Goncalo Franco to choose from, and with Fulton and Allen past their best, it would leave Swansea weak in the middle of the park, and it's easy to see why they're eyeing reinforcements.

Swansea have opted to sign a number of young players from abroad in recent seasons, in the hope that they could be resold for more money in the future, and it appears that would be the plan should Widell join.
