Swansea City have been told they must sign an attacking midfielder when the January transfer window opens if they're to compete in the top-half of the Championship table.

The Swans are currently the division's lowest goalscorers with just 11 goals in their opening 14 games, but despite that they're sitting in 9th place, just three points off the play-offs.

Considering their lack of goals, their current league position is a very respectable one, and suggests that if they can improve their attack in January and add more goals, there's no reason why they can't be in the play-off mix come May.

Swansea saw attacking midfielder Jamie Paterson depart on a free transfer in the summer, completing a deal to join MLS side Charlotte FC, and you could argue that he hasn't really been replaced, despite a number of attacking signings being made in the summer.

Swansea told to make signing an attacking midfielder a priority in January

We asked our Swansea City fan pundit, James Fleming, if he had a transfer demand for the club's owners in January, and he'd like to see an attacking midfielder brought in when the window opens.

Speaking to Football League World, James said: "I think if the question had been asked a couple of weeks ago I’d have said striker straight away, but now I’m thinking more of a creative midfielder, and someone who can play centrally.

“We have Myles Peart-Harris who’s proven to be better out wide, we have Florian Bianchini who’s proven to be better down the middle as a striker. We have Ollie Cooper, but he’s out injured for three months, and he’s not the most creative player in the world, he just runs really well, and he’s a great footballer, but I don’t think he’s the creative spark we need behind the attack.

“We need to find the number 10 player who can really make the difference. Noel Milleskog was someone we were linked with in the summer, and I’d like to see us pursue a deal for him because he looks like the perfect fit for that position.

“I think 100% an attacking midfielder should be our number one priority going into January if we want to be competitive at the top half of the table.”

Swansea have had to use square pegs in round holes quite often this season, with players like Ollie Cooper, Myles-Peart Harris and Liam Cullen all being used as a number 10.

While they've performed admirably, the trio probably aren't quite suited to that role, and signing an out-and-out number 10 like Noel Milleskog would give Williams' side a new dimension in attack.

Swansea were linked with the 22-year-old both in the summer and again last month as a potential January signing, and it's clear that he's a player that the club hierarchy like.

The Sirius man is versatile and can play in a number of attacking positions, and he's enjoyed a very decent season, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists in 32 games across all competitions.

That included nine goals and four assists in the Allsvenskan, and the 22-year-old certainly looks like he'd be a good signing for Swansea, and could be the player that replaces Paterson after his summer exit.
