After a run of four winless matches at home, Lazio roared back by demolishing Monza by five goals to one at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Marco Baroni confirmed his attacking choices as Taty Castellanos spearheaded the 4-2-3-1 formation, supported by Gustav Isasksen, Boulaye Dia and Mattia Zaccagni. In the middle of the park, Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi preserved their spots, while Nuno Tavares made his return to injury, joining Adam Marusic, Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli in the backline.
As expected, the Biancocelesti had the upper from the get-go, with Castellanos, Romagnoli and Zaccagni all coming close from the early onslaught. However, Salvatore Bocchetti’s men managed to hold on, until their lines were breached at the half-hour mark.
Isaksen instigated the play with some fine footwork on the right wing before laying it back to Guendouzi who sent his cross towards the back post. Castellanos showed his tenacity by keeping the ball and heading it back towards the mouth of the goal where the unmarked Marusic only had to nod it home from close range to give Lazio the lead.
In the second period, the Aquile simply ran riot, beginning with a goal from Pedro who replaced the injured Dia before half-time. Castellanos donned the creator’s hat once more, teeing up the Spaniard with an outrageous through ball. The veteran found himself in front of Semuel Pizzignacco and his finishing touch depicted his elusive experience.
Monza had hardly recovered from the second blow when they conceded the third goal. This time, Castellanos delivered the finishing touch. Zaccagni stormed to the box, and after some delightful dribbling, he laid the ball in the Argentine’s path who managed to find the far corner with a clinical low drive.
In the 77th minute, Tijjani Noslin and Loum Tchaouna made an immediate impact following their introductions. The Dutchman played a give-and-go with the young Frenchman before cutting it back to Pedro who completed a personal brace with another expert finish
On the other hand, Manuel Lazzari’s cameo was less impressive as he gave away a spot kick by blocking the ball with his hand. Although Stefano Sensi’s spot-kick was relatively weak, he still managed to beat Ivan Provedel who put a hand to the ball, but not enough power to prevent the goal.
Nevertheless, Lazio swiftly restored their four-goal lead through another substitute. Rovella picked up Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s run to the box, and the latter did well to steer away from his marker before smashing a powerful shot past the goalkeeper.
The Biancocelesti have temporarily restored the all-important fourth place, but they’ll be hoping that Fiorentina don’t pull off a second victory in four days over Inter Milan when the two clubs meet at San Siro on Monday.
