Italian giants Juventus are interested in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, according to Italian publication Gazzetta. Reports suggest that La Vecchia Signora believes the Italian could be available for a fee in the region of €60–70 million.
However, the asking price could be a stumbling block for Juventus. The report indicates that the club has ideas to facilitate the move by including a player plus cash in the deal. One such option is Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz. The 26-year-old moved to Serie A last summer but has struggled to settle due to injuries and falling out of favor under former manager Thiago Motta, who was recently sacked.
Luiz had spent five years in the Premier League, where he built a strong reputation. Juventus hopes his profile could interest Newcastle as a potential replacement for Tonali. In the 2023–24 season, Luiz played a key role in Aston Villa’s midfield, helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League with 10 goals and 10 assists.
Another player who could interest Newcastle is Juventus defender Federico Gatti. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe reportedly tried to sign him for around €25 million last summer, but Thiago Motta, who had just taken over as Juventus manager at the time, wanted to keep the defender.
Juventus could also offer a different option to Newcastle in the form of Serbian forward Dušan Vlahović. The striker has been consistently linked with a move away from the club, and with Newcastle set to be in the market for a new forward, he could be a tempting inclusion in any potential deal for Tonali. Newcastle’s star striker Alexander Isak is expected to attract interest from several top European clubs in the summer, while Callum Wilson is likely to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Tonali joined Newcastle ahead of the 2023–24 season as the most expensive Italian player of all time. He made an impressive start but was later handed a 10-month ban for breaching Italian betting regulations, which also ruled him out of UEFA Euro 2024. He has managed 26 appearances this season and was part of the Newcastle squad that won their first major trophy in nearly 70 years last month.
