Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brighton last week was arguably their worst performance of the season and Mail Sport have revealed what Enzo Maresca told his team following the defeat.

The Blues didn’t manage a single shot on target against the Seagulls, and are currently on a run of two wins in their last nine league matches.

Maresca’s men dropped to sixth in the table following wins for Manchester City and Bournemouth over the weekend, although they are just a point outside the top four.

What Maresca told his team after Brighton loss

Chelsea are now embroiled in a fierce race for the Champions League, and they can’t afford to miss out on qualification for the third year running.

John Obi Mikel has claimed it would be a disaster for the club, whilst it could also lead to players potentially questioning their futures at Stamford Bridge.

It’s claimed there’s no exit clauses in player contracts if the club don’t qualify for the Champions League, which is somewhat of a relief for supporters.

Maresca wasn’t happy after the Brighton defeat.

The Brighton defeat was a low point and Malo Gusto admitted after their opponents wanted to win the game more.

Maresca is facing a crucial 13 game run between now and the end of the season and Mail Sport have reported the Italian told his team injuries weren’t an excuse and that Brighton wanted it more.

That is damning and will hopefully serve as motivation and a wake up call for the players, with performance levels across the board currently unacceptable.

Maresca will be looking for a response from his team, but things don’t get any easier as they travel to Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

The Blues have shown they are capable of playing good football and picking results up, but they need to rediscover their form from earlier in the season otherwise they will continue to tumble down the league.
