Tottenham’s promising young talent, Dane Scarlett, has shown glimpses of potential during his loan spell at Oxford United.

However, his journey in the Championship has not been without its challenges. Despite some early successes, Scarlett now faces a period of inconsistency that could have implications for his future at Spurs.

The 21-year-old striker, who joined Tottenham’s academy as a teenager, was sent on loan to Oxford United for the 2023-24 season to gain valuable first-team experience.

Early signs were promising, as Scarlett scored four goals in his first seven appearances for the club. However, recent performances have been far from consistent, with Scarlett failing to find the back of the net in his last eight matches.

To make matters worse, he has found himself on the bench in Oxford’s most recent games, including their 3-2 win over Cardiff City and 2-0 victory against Plymouth Argyle.

This dip in form has led to speculation that Tottenham may reconsider Scarlett’s loan situation in January.

Could Tottenham reassess Dane Scarlett’s loan?

John Wenham, a Tottenham insider, has hinted that Spurs could decide to recall the forward as part of a wider reassessment of their young players out on loan.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said, “Strikers have hot and cold spells. “However, I think the bigger issue is that Oxford United have changed their manager, and I don’t know what the relationship is between Dane and the new boss."

Since Gary Rowett took over from Des Buckingham in mid-December, Scarlett has been relegated to the bench for all three of Oxford’s matches under Rowett’s management.

Wenham speculates that this change in management could be a key factor in Scarlett’s reduced role.

“We will have to wait and see on that one,” Wenham continued. "This is another situation where Tottenham could look to review the situation in January and potentially recall Scarlett.”

What’s next for Dane Scarlett?

If Tottenham does decide to recall Scarlett, they will need to consider his next steps carefully. The striker has shown promise, but with limited chances in the Premier League, he will likely need another loan spell to continue his development.

Spurs may look for a club that plays a style suited to Scarlett’s strengths and offers more regular first-team football.

Ultimately, this decision will be crucial for Scarlett’s future. While his time at Oxford has had its ups and downs, the 21-year-old still has the potential to make an impact at Tottenham if nurtured properly.
