Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as one of the likeliest suitors for unsettled Inter Milan star Davide Frattesi.

However, according to Calciomercato, Roma have joined Spurs in the race for the Italy international.

Frattesi has tumbled down the pecking order at the San Siro.

Despite his sterling exploits off the bench, the 25-year-old has mostly played second fiddle to Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Head coach Simone Inzaghi has only handed him four starts in Serie A this season, frequently using him as a late substitute.

Frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities, Frattesi has reportedly informed Inter of his desire to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.

The Italian midfielder has instructed his entourage to find him a new club.

Although he’s desperate to leave Inter in January, he’ll likely need to wait until the summer to complete his transfer.

Spurs have set their sights on the 25-capped Italy international as Ange Postecoglou intends to bolster his midfield options.

Tottenham have acquired six players from Italy’s top flight in recent years. More importantly, each signing has become a vital first-team asset.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski have been particularly outstanding.

Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have teamed up with the former Juventus stars in midfield, albeit with limited success.

Postecoglou aims to address the shortage of numbers in the engine room amid Tottenham’s faltering attempt to secure European football.

Frattesi would be a decent addition for Spurs, but they must pip Roma to his signature as the Italians want to lure the prodigal son back home.

The ex-Sassuolo ace graduated from the Giallorossi academy before departing for Emilia-Romagna in 2017.

He came close to returning to the Stadio Olimpico in 2023, only for Inter to beat Roma to the punch.

Aware of Frattesi’s torrid time at Meazza, sporting director Florent Ghisolfi acknowledged the Giallorossi’s interest in their homegrown midfielder.

Roma cannot compete with Spurs’ financial capacity, which doesn’t mean the Premier League club can afford to take them lightly.

Frattesi’s wish could make all the difference, and given his past connections with the Olimpico outfit, Tottenham would be well-advised to press the issue in the coming weeks.
