Troy Deeney has picked his best 12 performers from the weekend’s action.

The Premier League team of the week (and manager) that have most impressed him.

Included in his dozen choices are two from Newcastle United.

Maybe not selections you expected…

Troy Deeney explains why he has picked out Lewis Miley for his Premier League team of the week and Eddie Howe for Manager of the week, then the full eleven (twelve) are listed below:

Lewis Miley (Newcastle):

“Player of the weekend.

“Yes, he scored against Forest but he was excellent.

“At 18 years old it was a coming-of-age performance – he was mature, kept the ball well and ran over people.

“He made a few mistakes but that was fine, he carried on going and didn’t let anything affect him.”

Really surprised AND pleased, that Troy Deeney has picked out Lewis Miley.

Lewis Hall was obviously man of the match BUT at the age of 18, Miley continues to defy logic. Just how good is he going to be in the future?

What he is now is pretty special!

Lewis Miley has been really unlucky with injury problems but maybe not such a bad thing in one way, as taking him out of the limelight has reduced the pressure and expectation on someone who had to start a ridiculous number of matches last season as a 17 year old. Champions League, Premier League, domestic cups, most of the time starting weekend then midweek, then repeat.

The teenager has now returned to playing, looking even better in every department. Stronger, quicker, more confident, more of a goal threat, doing more on the ball…he has it all.

Much better from Troy Deeney.

Not just because he has picked a Newcastle player amongst the best Premier League performers.

More the fact that he appears to have put a bit more effort into his choices and what he has had to say about them, rather than very superficial and picking ‘obvious’ choices based more on profile and past success.

Plus, Troy Deeney not even suggesting that Lewis Miley will shortly be off to Arsenal…

Eddie Howe (Newcastle United):

“Newcastle have been on a good run and have won 13 of their past 16 games in all competitions.

“When they had that massively disappointing second half when they lost to Brentford in December, he spoke about having a chat with the group. Really cleared the air, really honest, probably cut-throat I would imagine, but then to go on and win as many as they have is massive.

“He orchestrated a Newcastle team that has moved potentially into the top four. They’re closing down Forest who are third, and closing down Manchester City.

“You wouldn’t bet against them finishing in the top four, and potentially beating Liverpool in next month’s Carabao Cup final.”

Same again with Eddie Howe, Troy Deeney giving a more grown-up evaluation of the overall situation at Newcastle United and exactly what the NUFC boss is achieving, despite three transfer windows with not a single first eleven contender coming in thanks to PSR. Though that set to change in July when two seasons with big losses are no longer on the three year PSR cycle.

As Troy Deeney indicates, if United can move to that stage of once again showing ambition in the transfer market to a backdrop of Champions League qualification and winning a trophy, that would be beyond belief. Eddie Howe having performed absolute miracles against the odds.
