They say that a week is a long time in politics and I reckon that that’s probably true in football too….

If you asked me a few weeks ago I’d have signed Jeffrey Schlupp on a permanent, now it’s a no-brainer, Greg Taylor must get a new deal…

Kieran Tierney plus either Jeffrey Schlupp or Greg Taylor

A few weeks ago if you asked me about the respective situations of Jeffrey Schlupp and Greg Taylor, I’d have be all for signing the on loan Crystal Palace man on a free, and letting Greg Taylor move on to pastures new.

However I have changed my mind somewhat, and for me it’s a must that we do all we possibly can to extend Greg Taylor’s stay at the club.

Jeffrey Schlupp looked the part when he arrived

Jeffrey Schlupp looked the part when he arrived, but has somewhat fallen off the boil in recent weeks and looks almost like a player lost at a club of Celtic’s stature. Greg Taylor, to his credit as he’s done throughout his Celtic career under three different managers, has fought hard and proved undoubtedly that he is the man in full possession of the left back slot at Celtic.

Greg Taylor never hides, and gives everything he has for the shirt

Greg might not be the most talented player in the squad,  nor does he get the praise and recognition he deserves, but he never hides, and gives everything he has for the shirt. He’s a fully committed player who knows how to do his job, and does it to the letter, and those players are hard to come by. You only have to listen to Callum McGregor’s comments on Taylor over the weekend to see how highly rated Taylor is within the squad. You’ve never heard the Celtic captain come out and so publicly urge the club to get a teammate’s contract sorted out.

Kieran Tierney will be the first choice left-back next season

Kieran Tierney is the man who is being brought in to take Greg’s position in the team, that’s not even up for debate, but due to KT’s well documented injury problems we need a reliable player to compete with the former Celtic favourite, and who better than the man who is already under our very own noses?

Callum McGregor urged Celtic to re-sign Greg Taylor

The Celtic captain also talked about being able to play both within the starting eleven and there seems to be some merit in this especially in tough away matches in the Champions League.

With KT returning it’s going to be Greg Taylor’s choice ultimately. Once he makes his decision then Brendan Rodgers will have a decision to make on Jeffrey Schlupp, who has shown enough to be a reliable enough understudy to KT next season at least.  But if you ask me, I’d rather get Greg Taylor to put pen to paper on a long term deal to stay at Celtic.
