Ange Postecoglou joked that his critics will have to put up with him “for a little bit longer” after Spurs beat Eintracht Frankfurt to reach the Europa League semi-finals.
Dominic Solanke’s first-half penalty in Germany handed Tottenham a 1-0 win on the night and 2-1 aggregate victory to progress.
Postecoglou’s future has been in question for a while following a disappointing campaign but despite a huge victory in the Europa League, the Spurs boss insists his attitude has not changed.
“I’m the same manager today as I was yesterday,” he said.
“If people think that us winning tonight makes me a better manager, whoever didn’t think I was doing a good job yesterday should be feeling the same way today.
“I don’t care. It doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t affect what I do. For me, it’s always about the dressing room. Do the players believe? Do the staff believe? That’s much more important than what others may make of me.
“Unfortunately for a lot of you you’re going to have to put up with me for a little bit longer so we’ll just see how that goes.”
Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua clattered into James Maddison, who was forced off as a result of the blow, to concede the penalty which Solanke calmly converted before the break.
And Postecoglou praised the resilience of his team to keep out the Bundesliga side despite being under pressure in the second half.
“I’m delighted with many things and I’m super proud of the lads,” he said.
“Playing away from home in a quarter-final against a very good side, you know you’re going to have to work really hard, be well organised and disciplined.
“We needed to score tonight so we needed to show the quality we have tonight as well.
“To a man, I just thought they were outstanding. I’m so proud of them. In such a big game, they delivered a performance which means we’re through to the semi-final.
“I think over the two legs we deserved to go through. The tie could have been over in the first leg but we’ve earned the right to be in the semi-finals.”
