Jack Skahan scored in the 116th minute to put the San Jose Earthquakes into their first U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal since 2017, sealing a 1-0 victory over the visiting Portland Timbers in Tuesday night's late kickoff in the U.S. Open Cup fifth round.

Skahan showed up near the back post to make sure Mark-Anthony Kaye's ball toward the 6-yard box found the bottom right corner. It's unclear if Kaye had intended the effort as a shot himself, or if it would've found the goal without Skahan's touch.

Nonetheless, the goal was Skahan's, his third in eight all-time U.S. Open Cup appearances, and it helped San Jose to its first-ever USOC win over the MLS version of the Portland Timbers. (The Quakes had previously advanced past the USL First Division Timbers squad back in 2005.)

San Jose is seeking its first-ever U.S. Open Cup title and first major domestic honor since 2012, while manager Bruce Arena is aiming to win the competition for the first time since he helped D.C. United become the first MLS team to win the honor in 1996.

New England Revolution 1, Chicago Fire 3

The good results for former U.S. men's national team managers extended to the other side of the country as well on Tuesday, where Gregg Berhalter's Chicago Fire earned an impressive 3-1 away win over the New England Revolution in a match played on the Providence College campus.

Jonathan Bamba opened the scoring just before halftime for Chicago -- in a sequence that was originally ruled an own-goal -- before Hugo Cuypers and Philip Zinckernagel added to the visitors' lead after the break.

The Fire are four-time Open Cup winners, last lifting the trophy in 2006. Berhalter has never won the honor.
