After their 2-1 success at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League versus Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano in the second leg. Consequent to that, extra time followed and with nothing to separate the rivals over the half hour, a penalty shootout ensued which the defending European champions won 4-2.

It is for the fifth time that Los Blancos have trumped Atleti in the Champions League, and doing so on this occasion sets them up against Arsenal in the quarter-final in April. Carlo Ancelotti’s side also faces Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, though before turning heads to La Liga, here is a look at how the players performed in the continental competition’s second leg against Los Rojiblancos.

Player Ratings

Thibaut Courtois – 7.5/10

Courtois made two or three good saves in regulation time to deny Atletico the lead on aggregate. He was unlucky to not have saved Angel Correa’s effort during the shootout.

Federico Valverde – 8.5/10

Valverde had a decent game at right back but played the latter half hour of the match and extra time as the midfielder. He absolutely dominated proceedings defensively and offensively as the Whites looked a lot more lively with him in their engine room.

Raul Asencio – 8/10

Asencio had a great outing too as he made four clearances and nine recoveries, and was not dribbled past even once all game. He even made a match-saving tackle late in the second half.

Antonio Rudiger – 8/10

A disciplined performance by Rudiger, who comfortably had Antoine Griezmann’s number on the night. He won some important duels in the match and also guided home the winning penalty in the shootout.

Ferland Mendy – 3/10

One of Mendy’s poorest performances in a Real Madrid shirt. He was guilty for the hosts’ goal for not closing down the opponent quickly while giving away the ball cheaply in dangerous situations a handful of times.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 7.5/10

Tchouameni played only 65 minutes but put his best foot forward when Atletico were on the transition, making one interception, one clearance and five recoveries in the process.

Luka Modric – 7.5/10

Modric was also on the pitch for just 65 minutes but was instrumental in helping Real Madrid dominate the ball against a very well-organised and hard-working opponent.

Jude Bellingham – 8.5/10

Bellingham was solid on both ends of the pitch as he completed four dribbles, made six clearances and won 13 duels, whilst also easily dispatching his penalty during the shootout.

Rodrygo Goes – 7/10

Rodrygo was Real Madrid’s only winger early on who made a consistent effort at trying to take his man on and enter the area, though that led to him being tired and withdrawn 80 minutes after kick-off.

Kylian Mbappe – 7/10

Mbappe was hounded by the opponent more often than not but looked like a threat when he managed to get space as he also won the penalty in regulation time after some artful footwork.

Vinicius Junior – 5.5/10

A very poor game by Vinicius, who was frustrated by Giuliano Simeone and Marcos Llorente, who double teamed against him whenever he had the ball. The Brazilian also missed a penalty in regulation time.

Substitutes

Lucas Vazquez – 7.5/10

A good outing for Vazquez off the bench as he looked comfortable with the ball at his feet and did not let the opposition cause him much trouble at the back. He missed his spot-kick in the shootout.

Eduardo Camavinga – 8/10

A superb performance by Camavinga, who helped Real do better on the attacking transitions with his forward passing and dribbling, while also winning the ball several times by chasing down Atleti players when Real Madrid were out of possession.

Brahim Diaz – 7/10

Against a stubborn Atletico backline, Brahim tried having a go at his men in one-on-one situations but was unlucky to not have any meaningful impact against a very low Atletico block.

Fran Garcia – 7.5/10

Fran helped Vinicius and Mbappe attack better on the left, while he also tracked Julian Alvarez’s and Simeone’s runs neatly, therefore doing a tremendously better job than Mendy at left back once more.

Endrick – N/A

Endrick came into the game on the 115th minute and had little to do as the game petered out and into a penalty shootout.
