Chelsea are cruising at 2-0 against Heidenheim, although it’s been a fantastic match with chances both ways.

The Blues looked like they were really going to get themselves in trouble, after spurning a number of chances they were giving away plenty to their spirited opposition – who had two goals disallowed.

But finally one of Enzo Maresca’s team’s counter attacks paid off. Nice play down the right between Renato Veiga and Jadon Sancho left the tired defence pulled apart, and a cutback to Mykhailo Mudryk was met with a booming first time right footed strike into the top corner. That’s 5 assists in 6 starts for Sancho this season, by the way.

Mudryk is making a habit of finishes like that in this competition – but needs more consistency when given the chance in the Premier League or other games that really matter. That’s the problem with players like him and Christopher Nkunku tearing up the Conference League – it should improve their chances of a league start, but in the end, what does it really prove?

Mudryk faces uphill battle even for a Premier League start – despite glowing European form

Like so many others, all Mudryk can do is keep scoring and doing well in this competition. But the pecking order is pretty set now, and it’s hard to see what anyone could do to usurp Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto, who have established themselves as Maresca’s favoured pair.

Mudryk, Sancho, Joao Felix, Nkunku… there are so many players doing well in this competition, and they have to get ahead of the others to even get a sniff of the first team.
