Matty Warhurst says he ‘loves scoring goals’ in the FA Youth Cup, the ‘biggest competition’ at Academy level.
The City Under-18s striker bagged a brace in Tuesday night’s 6-1 triumph over Leeds United which saw us progress to the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition.
The 18-year-old has scored five goals in eight games over the past two seasons and hasn’t lost a fixture in the competition since stepping up to our Under-18s side last campaign.
With two assists also to his name in the FA Youth Cup, it’s clear it is a competition he loves to shine in.
“In my opinion it’s [FA Youth Cup] the biggest competition and I love scoring goals and helping the team,” said Warhurst with a smile.
“It’s even better when you know you have to win the game so the goals are even more important.
“Our intensity was good and obviously it was great to finish 6-1. We don’t have that happen often in these competitions, even though they were down to 10 men.
“I still think we handled the game well and still kept the same intensity and punished them with the extra man.”
Warhurst opened up the scoring for City at the LNER Stadium, tapping home in the fourth minute after a quick high press from Ryan McAidoo caught Leeds off guard.
Reigan Heskey made it two with a thunderous free-kick before Warhurst made it three shortly before the break.
Oliver Boast scored a consolation for the hosts on the brink of half-time but City’s dominating second half performance meant goals from McAidoo, Finlay Gorman and Luca Fletcher completed a fantastic evening.
That’s 10 goals in four days for Oliver Reiss’s Under-18s who beat Under-18 Premier League North title holders Manchester United 4-0 last Saturday.
And Warhurst attributes our undefeated run of form in 2025 to the hard work of the team.
“I think we’re training really hard and obviously during the games we’re putting what we practice into action,” explained Warhurst.
“Everyone is working for each other both defensively and in attacking. And we all love winning games which drives us forward.
“Now we get to take that into our preparations for West Brom in the next round too so we’re all looking forward to it.”
