Manchester United U21s lost their second consecutive game in the Premier League 2, losing 2-0 to Chelsea at Kingsmeadow on Friday evening.
Jack Moorhouse, Jack Fletcher, Harry Amass and Tyler Fredricson returned to the starting line-up after their involvement with the first team last weekend.
United started brilliantly, with Gabriele Biancheri getting the game’s first chance, forcing goalkeeper Ted Curd to make a save in the seventh minute.
William Murdock made his first save of the game three minutes later, denying forward Ryan Kavuma-McQueen from opening the scoring.
Kavuma-McQueen eventually scored the opening goal for Chelsea in the 14th minute, planting a shot into the bottom corner after United lost the ball carelessly.
Biancheri had the chance to level the scoring, one-on-one with Curd, but he could not beat the Chelsea goalkeeper with his effort.
Harrison Murray-Campbell defended resolutely to deny Jack Fletcher from tying the scores with a header in the 36th minute.
The Blues doubled their advantage just before half-time after clever play from Ronnie Stutter. He found Ato Ampah who put the ball home.
Substitute Leo Cardoso almost added to Chelsea’s tally, collecting a cross from Stutter, but he could not hit the target.
Two minutes later, Amir Ibragimov’s poor touch prevented him from threatening Chelsea’s goal, but he found Harry Amass, whose effort was dealt with.
The defeat leaves United in fifth place in the standings, 13 points behind table-toppers Manchester City.
