Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca confirmed that defender Wesley Fofana is close to returning from injury in his press conference ahead of their Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion tonight.

The Blues have been without the France international centre-half for almost three months. He picked up this hamstring injury in early December. Maresca told reporters that the former Leicester City defender is two or three weeks away from returning to action.

Fofana gave Chelsea fans a massive boost with a post on Instagram of himself working on the pitch, spotting a new hairstyle. The Blues hope to have him back soon as they bid to get their top-four chase on track.

Fofana was a mainstay in the Chelsea XI for Maresca, complementing Levi Colwill’s passing with his ability to carry the ball out of defence and start attacks.

His injury forced Chelsea to recall Trevoh Chalobah to provide cover in January after Renato Veiga left on loan and Benoit Badiashile also picked up an injury.

Badiashile and Fofana are close to returning to action, but injuries have continued to ravage Chelsea. Nicolas Jackson is ruled out till April, and back-up centre-forward Marc Guiu is also on the treatment table alongside midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Maresca used Christopher Nkunku as a false nine against Brighton in the FA Cup, and the result was a dreadful attacking display. The manager must find other solutions as Chelsea desperately need a result to consolidate fourth position on the league log.

Chelsea must sell Fofana this summer

Fofana, who earns £200k a week (Capology), will give Chelsea a welcome boost for the rest of the season but needs to be on the chopping block this summer.

The 24-year-old has struggled to consistently play games without picking up injuries. His speed has already started declining, and his strength in physical duels is waning.

Despite his undeniable talent, Chelsea may have to make a tough decision regarding Fofana’s future this summer. His persistent injury struggles and high wages make him a potential candidate to exit Stamford Bridge.
