Milan were given a penalty kick in the second half of Sunday’s derby della Madonnina, but VAR urged referee Maurizio Mariani to the pitchside monitor as Lautaro Martinez had touched the ball with his shoulder.

The Milan derby kicked off at 20:45 CET (18:45 GMT) at the Stadio Meazza in San Siro.

The result was 1-1 at minute 66 when referee Mariani awarded Milan a penalty kick for a Lautaro Martinez handball inside the box.

However, the match official was quickly urged to the VAR pitchside monitor, as replays immediately evidently showed that the Nerazzurri captain had touched the ball with his shoulder and not with his arm.

Mariani didn’t take long to review the incident and overturn his decision, cancelling the penalty for Milan.

It’s a home fixture for the Nerazzurri, so the vast majority of fans at San Siro widely celebrated, while Milan ultras in Curva Sud mocked their rivals by singing, ‘You are like Juventus.’
