Once again, Beerschot and Kortrijk failed to win their respective matches in the Belgian Pro League this weekend. Bottom of the table Beerschot battled to a 1-1 draw with inform Charleroi, while Kortrijk ended up losing to another inform side in Union St Gilloise.
Beerschot are so far adrift, with just 14 points from their 25 games. They would need to win all five in order to catch OH Leuven and get to safety. The best the side can hope for is to finish in 14th and face the relegation play off. However, even to do that would take some doing. The side, who have won just twice all season, will need to avoid defeat in their remaining five games and grab a few wins along the way before the play-offs started. After they face Gent on Sunday they face sides all in and around the bottom four, with Dender away, KV Mechelen at home, Sint Truiden away and Westerlo at home. It isn’t impossible that they could have a chance of survival come the end of the regular season, but it is highly unlikely.
Kortrijk have been one of the biggest disappointments this season. The Kerels have not won since the end of November, a 3-1 win over KV Mechelen. The side look destined for the drop, with just 19 points to their name from 25 games so far. They face Antwerp on Saturday before hosting Cercle Brugge the following week. They also face fellow strugglers Sint Truiden and OH Leuven in back to back games before travelling to Gent to end the season. Safety for Kortrijk is 10 points away, which is a huge ask given they have only won five games so far this season. Goals have been hard to come by with a miserly 20 in 25 games. It looks like the sister club of Cardiff City are set to be relegated from the Belgian Pro League.
