Women’s Super League champions Chelsea continued their push towards an invincible season with their latest win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The only goal came from a penalty by Catarina Macario for the visitors at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Blues are now one game away from becoming invincible. Chelsea are also still yet to lose to Spurs.
Sonia Bompastor, who has wrapped up Chelsea’s sixth consecutive WSL title in her maiden season in charge, spoke to the media about their chances of ended the campaign unbeaten.
“I think being invincible during the season won’t bring us any trophy, but I think it’s more like showing mentality. The right mentality we have as competitors — we want to stay unbeaten.”
Chelsea’s latest win over Spurs came after they were crowned WSL champions with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.
At the beginning of the first half, Spurs dominated a routed Chelsea side. Within the eighth minute, Bethany England came close, running down the side with a cross into the box that Charlotte Grant could not touch, leading to Hannah Hampton collecting the ball.
Tottenham created some other chances in the first half but it was a penalty just after the half hour mark that sealed the deal for their opponents.
A foul from Ash Neville handed Chelsea their spot-kick, which Macario dispatched with ease after sending Lize Kop the wrong way.
The final action of the half came after Charlotte Grant was left alone with just her and Hampton in the 42nd minute. Grant released the ball but the Chelsea shot-stopper denied the equaliser with a trailing leg as she threw herself towards the threat.
After the break, Macario gave away a free-kick with a foul on Olivia Holdt just minutes after the Spurs player was shown a yellow card. Eveliina Summanen took the set piece and went straight towards the goal. The shot was on target, and from the Spurs fans’ perspective, it went in. They started to celebrate an equaliser, but it had actually blazed wide.
Kop was on-hand to make a super double save to deny Chelsea the chance to extend their lead late on. The Dutch star thwarted Ashley Lawrence’s attempt and then Sjoeke Nüsken on the rebound.
Before the match, Bompastor spoke to her players about their potential invincible season. If Chelsea win their final match against Liverpool, they will rack up 60 points, beating their current record of 58 set in the 2022/23 season.
“I know later it will probably be part of the history. It’s always lovely to be part of history in women’s football,” the Blues manager said.
Tottenham boss Robert Vilahamn attributed this looming milestone to a lack of confidence on his team’s part.
“I’ve seen Charlotte Grant score many goals in training, and when you get it on a big stage, she is not so used to that. I think it’s a little bit with the pressure there, too. But then I also think we still have an excellent build-up — we have some really good attacks, but we’re not reaching that last third with the power and quality we need. So I think it comes down to quality as well, but we have players who should develop to that level.”
Chelsea will play out their last WSL game against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, while Spurs are away to fellow Merseyside club Everton. The Blues will lift the WSL trophy a week before their FA Cup final clash against Manchester United.
