Another round of results in the Barclays Women’s Super League has drawn to a close but the injury concerns within certain clubs continue. As we approach the final weeks of 2024, the action is heating up in England’s top flight as the fights for glory and survival continue.
Take a look below as we round up the latest WSL injury news following the most recent round of fixtures.
After Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, Sonia Bompastor announced a fresh injury blow for her side. Kadeisha Buchanan tore her ACL in the Blues’ 3-0 victory against Liverpool on November 10th.
Bompastor confirmed the news after their latest win, saying: “We found out the results this morning but she did her ACL after the Liverpool game.”
Buchanan joins Sam Kerr, Mia Fishel, Sophie Ingle and Jorja Fox, who are all currently recovering from ACL injuries at Chelsea. The Blues are also currently without Niamh Charles, as she is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during pre-season. They are also without Lauren James, who remains out with a calf problem.
A fresh blow to Manchester United and England has emerged following the news that Ella Toone is injured. Toone missed out on the game against Leicester City through a leg injury. United confirmed that Toone had torn her calf and would be out for at least six weeks. This means the Lioness will also miss the upcoming England friendlies against the USA and Switzerland.
United will also be without Aoife Mannion, as she is set to be sidelined for a few weeks due to a muscle injury. The Republic of Ireland will also miss her during their two huge qualifying games against Wales to try and secure a spot for Euro 2025.
Aston Villa have confirmed that defender Lucy Parker will be sidelined for a number of weeks following an ankle injury. The injury was sustained during their 0-0 draw against Manchester United on November 10th. This will also come as a blow to England as they will miss her in their upcoming friendlies.
West Ham have confirmed that Katrina Gorry suffered a shoulder injury at their away game against Brighton and Hove Albion. This injury resulted in Gorry being substituted in the 74th minute after scoring two goals for her side. It’s hugely disappointing news for West Ham, as they lose their captain, while Australia will also miss out as she has withdrawn from their upcoming games against Brazil and Chinese Taipei. West Ham have confirmed Gorry has already started her rehabilitation programme.
Manchester City have recently welcomed Jill Roord back to full fitness but the injuries haven’t stopped there. Already without Vivianne Miedema, Man City have added to the list of WSL injury news. It has now been confirmed that Lauren Hemp will be sidelined for a number of weeks after a successful knee surgery. She is now working with the club’s medical team on her rehabilitation.
However, Sarina Wiegman did confirm in a recent England press conference that it is not related to an ACL injury. Both Man City and England will miss Hemp’s skills and speed after she has already scored 2 goals across all competitions and has an assist count of 10.
