Friday’s football preview for the weekend’s biggest games is back, featuring the Madrid derby and a classic FA Cup tie.
Here are our five must-watch games.
The FA Cup’s fourth round has thrown up some terrific ties, with perhaps the pick Birmingham’s date with Newcastle at St Andrews.
Birmingham broke new ground in the summer, smashing the League One transfer record three times in a club-record spend. Backed by American owners including NFL legend Tom Brady, the Blues have bold ambitions. This weekend, Birmingham take on Newcastle bidding to cause a cup upset. It has all the ingredients of a brilliant FA Cup tie.
Paris Saint-Germain are marching towards another Ligue 1 title, though the champions face one of the toughest examinations of the campaign this weekend. Monaco sit third in the table and are competing for the ‘best of the rest’ title alongside Nice, Lille and Marseille.
The Principality club have already claimed the scalps of Barcelona and Aston Villa in European football this season. After two defeats to PSG already this season, Monaco will be hoping it’s third time lucky against French football’s dominant force.
Portuguese football has a cracking contest on Friday evening as Porto host Sporting at the Estádio do Dragão. The visitors lead the title race and are heading towards consecutive Primeira Liga crowns. Porto are eight points off the pace at present but can narrow the gap to the capital club with three points on home soil.
However, Porto boss Martín Anselmi must combat the January losses of Galeno and Nico Gonzalez, sold for a combined €110m.
Inter Milan and Fiorentina meet for the second time in a week at the San Siro. The former were thrashed 3-0 on Thursday night in a result that blew the Serie A title race wide open. Moise Kean’s brilliant season with La Viola continued with a double, for a Fiorentina side with just 14 senior players available.
Inter will be out for revenge on Monday night.
The spiciest showdown of the weekend takes place in Spain’s capital, as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid renew rivalries.
Just a point separates the top two in the title race with plenty on the line at the Bernabeu. Diego Simeone’s Atletico are exceeding expectations this season and remain right in the race for the title.
With the last two meetings having ended all square, will we see a winner this time around?
