Bild reports that it is increasingly likely that on-loan VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel will stay at the club next season.

In the loan agreement between Stuttgart and Bayern Munich for Nübel, there is a clause that Bayern can activate by April 30th to bring the national team goalkeeper back to the Allianz Arena. After the signing of Jonas Urbig in the winter, it is unlikely that Bayern will activate the clause.

Once the loan next season expires, Nübel should then return to Bayern and fight for the number one spot with Jonas Urbig, unless Manuel Neuer has still not retired.

Since joining Stuttgart, Nübel has played an important role in Stuttgart’s second-place finish last season and has made his debut for the German national team.

Rather surprisingly, Nübel’s contract at Bayern has been extended by a year until 2030 following the extension of Neuer’s deal earlier this year. This was due to a clause in his contract that Nübel signed before he rejoined Stuttgart on loan.

This whole saga continues to show how poorly Bayern have handled the goalkeeping situation. Instead of forcing Neuer to step aside, after his decline in performances, they continue to let him decide on his future which means Bayern are unable to properly plan for his successor. This approach also means that Bayern have five goalkeepers on their books with Neuer, Urbig, Nübel as well as Sven Ulreich and Daniel Peretz.
