The striker's strong goalscoring form helped Blues soar to their record-breaking points haul

Birmingham City striker Alfie May believes his decision to join the club over a potential move to Huddersfield Town has been fully justified.

The 31-year-old earned a reputation as League One's most potent goal-getter since the turn of the decade after enjoying three fine seasons at the level with Cheltenham Town and Charlton Athletic prior to his move to the West Midlands.

It came as a shock to many that the Addicks were willing to sanction his departure after a season which yielded 23 goals in just 43 league appearances at the Valley, which led to the duo of newly-relegated sides battling it out for his signature as they searched for an instant return to the Championship.

But, with Huddersfield's struggles this season well-documented, as Michael Duff was sacked in March before a run of eight defeats in 10 games closed out the season, in comparison to Blues' record-breaking feats and overall dominance in the third-tier, the striker has no regrets whatsoever.

Alfie May issues claim on Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town transfer saga as Championship awaits

The Terriers' pursuit of May was extremely strong last summer, with the Gravesend-born forward admitting the West Yorkshire side's interest in his services was "unbelievable" after netting the winner against them at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on October 2nd.

As Birmingham carried out their highly-publicised and, once again, record-breaking, rebuild, the B9 club then hijacked the deal which saw him sign on the dotted line for a reported £775,000 on a three-year deal.

The former Doncaster Rovers man spoke at length about the feeling of pulling on the royal blue throughout the season, eventually ending it as the club's second-highest scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, as well as ranking third in the division for his combined G+A tally, which ended on 24 from 44 games.

Unsurprisingly, with Chris Davies' side ending the season on a world-record 111 points and an EFL high number of 34 wins from 46 games, May believes the eventual outcome in the transfer saga proved to be the best possible.

“I was nearly a Huddersfield player but the minute I actually spoke to the gaffer and the plan that he set out and said to me, it was something I just really wanted to be a part of,” he said via Birmingham Live.

“I’m not saying Huddersfield won’t get back to the Championship. I’m 31, the drive the gaffer had to get this club back to the Championship, I just wanted to be a part of it.

“I made the right choice. Next year I’m going to be a Championship player. I can tell my kids that I’ve played in the Championship and that will mean a lot to me," he added.

Alfie May will be full of confidence as Birmingham City prepare for Championship

After a two-and-a-half-month goal drought at the turn of 2025, May ended the season in fine form as Blues continued to break records, as well as ending the season as the division's top scorers with a total of 84 strikes.

Having been signed as someone who could play an integral role in the first part of Tom Wagner's rebuilding job as chairman, questions have been raised as to whether May will receive ample minutes in the second-tier, as Blues are expected to invest heavily once more.

Having only started 27 league games this term, those doubts could have been heightened before talk of a reunion with former Blues cult hero, Che Adams, was recently put to bed, although there has been debate that Davies will need to bolster his attacking department, which currently features Jay Stansfield and Lyndon Dykes alongside May.

However, with this being his first-ever shot at Championship football, there will be an even greater determination from the experienced striker to continue where he left off in the season's final weeks and prove that he belongs at the level, regardless of how long that could be for.
