The latest 1-1 draw against Arsenal was a fair result for Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim’s side showed improvement compared to past performances. André Onana had some key saves, and the backline did well to absorb a lot of the visitor’s pressure throughout the match. Midfield, however, posed some questions entering the match.

Christian Eriksen and Casemiro often had to drop deep. They emphasized protecting the defence and frustrating Gunner attacks. One man, Bruno Fernandes, stepped up yet again, as he has throughout the season. It was the captain’s quality and passion for the badge that earned a great deal of praise during the post-game press conference.

Fernandes receives ultimate compliment from Amorim

With a beautifully taken free kick, the captain gave Man Utd a late first-half lead at Old Trafford. This moment may have stood out to many. As it should. It was an incredibly placed shot, just beyond the reach of David Raya.

While this was Fernandes’ highlight, his overall play and leadership throughout the campaign have been equally phenomenal. Amorim took a moment to share his perspective on the current man with the armband:

What I can say is that we need more Brunos. That is clear. Not just the quality, the character…the character he has, the availability in this league is so important and is so decisive with the ball and without.

A coach wishing to have more of one specific player goes beyond regular interview speak. It shows how much the Portuguese manager trusts the #8 jersey wearer. On a squad that currently has debatable inclusions, Amorim is also asking the rest of his players to emulate Fernandes a bit more.

The fiery rage can land the captain in trouble at times. He is, more times than not, able to control and channel his aggression into full 90-minute performances. Most United fans would agree that without his inclusion, the season would have been a complete disaster altogether.

These are difficult times at Carrington. New players need to be brought in, and current members on the roster will depart. Amroim may have been directly giving a compliment after a hard-fought point, but he’s also indirectly warning everyone else. Shape up and show up like Fernandes. If you can’t, then others will enter the club who fit the profile better.

Skill and quality aren’t enough for incoming Man Utd transfers

Supporters of the club are far removed from the Sir Alex Ferguson years. By now, all should see that bringing in a player for past performances or potential alone is a recipe for a poor fit. Luckily for spectators, Amorim is ahead in this aspect.

While giving glowing remarks about his team’s spirit against Arsenal, he touched on the challenge of getting the right players to his side:

Sometimes you have luck with the character of the player or not. Even with all the investigation that we, all the coaches, do before signing players.

A staff can never truly know how someone will work out until they step foot at the club. This squad needs upgrades, particularly in the attack and midfield. Every transfer window has appealing names. If the past years, and this season in particular, have shown, Man Utd needs to prioritize players like Fernandes who show unwavering dedication, even during a sea of poor results and frustration.
