Real Madrid’s defensive structure for the remainder of the season is becoming clearer, with David Alaba set to play a central role alongside Antonio Rudiger.
According to reports from journalist Rodra (h/t RM4 Arab), the club’s technical staff have outlined a plan where the Austrian defender will be a key figure in the heart of the defence, despite having recently returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
For what it is worth, though, this development could mean that Raul Asensio, despite his solid performances, may see his minutes reduced.
The Spanish defender has been impressive whenever called upon, but with Alaba now back in contention, the competition for a starting spot has intensified.
The coaching staff value Alaba’s experience and composure, which were evident in his return match against Girona. Despite being out for over a year, he looked sharp, physically strong, and in control at the back.
His presence helped Real Madrid keep a clean sheet in that game, reinforcing the belief that he is ready to reclaim his starting role.

Internally, the coaching staff are planning to rotate the available centre-backs over the coming weeks. Aurelien Tchouameni is also expected to contribute in defence when necessary.
However, even with Asensio’s strong performances, the preference appears to be for Alaba and Rudiger as the first-choice pairing.
Asensio has certainly made a name for himself this season, featuring in 24 matches and accumulating 1,584 minutes of playing time.
Asencio’s standout performances, particularly in the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Champions League clashes against Manchester City, have demonstrated his defensive abilities.
However, Carlo Ancelotti values Alaba’s experience and leadership more than Asensio’s physicality and aggression.
In the coming weeks, Real Madrid’s defensive lineup will continue to rotate, but when it comes to the most crucial matches, Alaba and Rudiger are expected to lead the backline.
