There are increasing reports that Chelsea’s wobble is causing serious concern in the playing squad about the state of the season and some aspects of Enzo Maresca’s management.

TeamTalk are today reporting that there “are some players in the Chelsea squad who are fearful of missing out on the Champions League due to decisions made higher up at the club.”

It gets even worse: reportedly “a source within the club, who has requested to remain anonymous, says that there is unrest among some of the top players and fears of yet again missing out on Europe’s top competition.”

Last week saw the Blues lose to Brighton on Saturday night football, with Jamie Carragher putting forward the idea that top stars like Cole Palmer could quickly start to get itchy feet if the Blues don’t look like the project is moving forward.

Maresca should be safe even if players and fans have doubts

In terms of Maresca, we’re still convinced that those in charge will do everything to keep him in place. He’s the third permanent coach they’ve appointed in 3 seasons, and if they sack him they know they will surely follow. They’ve seen enough from him this season that they are likely to continue to back him, even if things get worse.

We’ve even today heard backing from a club director, although famously in football support from upstairs is in plentiful supply until the moment the trigger is pulled on a coach.

So while fans and even these players may have rising doubts, those in charge look almost certain to stick with Maresca until the bitter end. Missing out on Champions League football would be a catastrophe for the club’s finances and for the players who want to compete at the top – but even that might not be enough to oust Maresca.
