Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has taken a brutal dig at Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes after the Gunners secured a 1-1 draw against the Red Devils on Sunday at Old Trafford.
Fernandes opened the scoring for the Red Devils with a brilliant free kick, although questions need to be asked about Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s positioning.
The 30-year-old midfielder appeared to have moved the ball an extra yard, which gave him the elevation needed.
The free-kick should be taken from 10 yards out from the wall, but the £375k-per-week Man Utd star appeared to have pulled one yard behind.
That gave him the advantage to get the ball above Arsenal’s defence and aim into the net. The ball flew just centimetres above Gabriel’s head. So, that one extra yard made the difference in the end.
When Arteta was asked about the extra advantage Fernandes may have taken, the Gunners’ boss described him as a “streetsmart” player who is cleverer than the referee.
The Arsenal boss said: “They just mentioned that. If Bruno has done that, football is for streetsmart players and he’s done that and capitalised on it, he’s more clever than us and the referee.
“I don’t know but he’s done it, it was a goal, so they took advantage of that. Football is for clever people.”
It was a frustrating afternoon for Arsenal, who now trail Liverpool by 15 points. The title race is as good as over.
Man Utd are 14th in the league with 34 points and they must look to finish the season strongly to get into the top half of the table.
The Red Devils have won just once in their last five Premier League games, although they have shown signs of improvement under Ruben Amorim.
United will face Real Sociedad in the second leg of the Europa League round of 16 clash at Old Trafford on Thursday night. They drew 1-1 in the first leg away in Spain.
