Mikel Arteta must again contend with significant injury list

Arsenal should be boosted by the return of Ben White and Jurrien Timber for Saturday’s showdown with Leicester, but David Raya remains a doubt.

The defenders missed the Gunners’ Carabao Cup win over Bolton on Wednesday night and were left out of the squad entirely.

Arteta, however, has revealed that the pair are doing well and should be involved this weekend when Arsenal host Leicester.

“Jurrien was able to take part in training today, that’s good news, so he’ll be available in the squad,” said Arteta. “Hopefully Ben, too.”

Arsenal are sweating on the fitness of goalkeeper Raya, though, who also missed Wednesday’s win over Bolton with a thigh injury.

“We have to wait another 24 hours,” said Arteta. “We have to wait 24 hours to see if it’s looking good or not that good.

“It’s not about a risk, it’s about a player being fit and available or not. When we have that clarity for Leicester, which is the main thing we’re thinking about at the moment, we will make that decision tomorrow.”

Jurrien Timber is back in training for Arsenal

Arsenal will be without captain Martin Odegaard, who remains absent due to an ankle injury picked up earlier this month playing for Noway.

Midfielder Mikel Merino is still out with a shoulder injury, but he could be back in action next week.

“Tomorrow is too soon. Next week we’ll see,” Arteta said on Friday. “He had partial training today. He’s been working so hard.

“It’s looking good. It’s about the healing of the bone and how mature that is to expose him to contact basically.”
