As a Wigan Athletic fan – I just wanted to have another quick word about Dan Burn

Back in January, Wigan Athletic fan Phil Stephens got in touch with us here at The Mag, he wanted to talk about Dan Burn.
This is what Phil had to say in early January 2025 about the big lad from Blyth:
‘I have been a Wigan Athletic fan for 50 years now and I just wanted to have a quick word about Dan Burn.
In the past, I have been up to St James’ Park to watch Newcastle United, back in the early eighties.
My mate Charlie Blake was a Newcastle United fanatic.
Dan Burn spent two and a half seasons (2016/17, 2017/18 and the first half of 2018/19) at Wigan, playing for us in the Championship and League One.
He was a top bloke and excellent player for us, when turning out for Wigan in the second and third tiers.
Looking from afar, it has been great to see him forming such a solid partnership with Fabian Schar in central defence.
Eddie Howe has helped him now become an excellent player in the top tier.
About time the media gave Dan Burn the proper recognition that he deserves.
On what I have seen, he is worthy of an England call up.
All the best to Dan Burn and I hope to see him playing many more matches for Newcastle United (and England…?) at the top level.’
Only two and a half months later.
Dan Burn called up by England, winning a trophy with Newcastle United, scoring the crucial brilliant first goal at Wembley AND named man of the match against Liverpool.
Phil Stephens has been back in touch this (brilliant but hungover) Monday morning:
‘Well done from the WIGANERS.
Who would have thought a few weeks ago that we were discussing SUPERMAN Dan Burn…
Now thousands of Newcastle United fans with headaches and the whole of the football world know Dan Burn now.
Not forgetting Graeme Jones, another Wigan cult hero.
Take plenty of paracetamol today.
UP THE GEORDIES.
Cheers Phil’
