Ashley Williams believes that West Ham United boss Julen Lopetegui has given the wrong players the wrong jobs, amid a damaging 3-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea.

West Ham were hopeful of troubling Chelsea when they visited the London Stadium on Saturday, but they came up badly short.

Chelsea eased to a 2-0 lead by half-time through a Nicolas Jackson brace, while Cole Palmer then scored the Blues’ third just two minutes into the second half.

Lopetegui, who was West Ham’s choice to replace David Moyes, was backed with a number of signings over the summer, is now coming under pressure following the Hammers’ poor start to the season.

Former Premier League defender Williams thinks Lopetegui needs to look at how he is setting his team up because in his view the Spaniard is getting it wrong.

“Julen Lopetegui has just assigned the wrong players to the wrong jobs”, Williams said on the BBC’s Match of the Day.

“This is his tactics – that man has got to take a little bit of responsibility for this result.”

West Ham are currently preparing for a trip to Liverpool to face Arne Slot’s side in the EFL Cup.
