Kirsty Hanson forced a diving save from Melina Loeck in the Albion goal, Gabi Nunes almost took the ball off the feet of the keeper, later seeing her header tipped over.

Maria Thorisdottir had failed to finish at the far post from Brighton but in the 45th minute Nikita Parris rolled the ball home when Lucy Parker made a mess of a clearance.

Seconds later Villa were back on level terms, Jordan Nobbs’ corner bundled in at the far post by Anna Patten.

Nobbs also set up the second goal five minutes after the interval, delivering the ball into the box for Rachel Daly to not into the bottom corner.

Five minutes further on and Chasity Grant put the hosts in command at 3-1 up, with a strike across the keeper.

With 18 minutes left on the clock Brighton were back in it, Madison Haley playing the ball through to Parris who held off her marker to finish.

Villa survived a 90th-minute goalmouth scramble, with the whistle going in their favour.

The quarter-final draw on Tuesday 11 February will be streamed live on the Adobe Women’s FA Cup YouTube channel at 6.30pm.
