According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have set their sights on Colombian U20 international Neyser Villarreal, a promising young forward currently playing for Millonarios in Colombia.

The 20-year-old striker is beginning to draw significant interest from European clubs, and Barça are reportedly exploring the option of signing him for a relatively modest fee.

Villarreal’s current contract with Millonarios expires in December 2025, and while his club has made efforts to extend his stay, the player has so far declined to renew, which has only increased speculation over a possible move abroad.

With Barcelona now keeping a close watch on his situation, there is growing belief that he could become one of the club’s next strategic low-cost investments.

Atletico Madrid have already been rejected

The report states that Atletico Madrid had already reached an agreement with Millonarios to secure Villarreal’s transfer for €4 million plus performance-based add-ons, but the move hit a stumbling block.

The player’s representatives refused the proposal, just as they did earlier this year when Millonarios had a deal in place to send Villarreal to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama. That deal also collapsed due to the same agents pulling the plug.

Barcelona’s interest in Villarreal reflects a familiar pattern. In recent seasons, the Catalan giants, grappling with financial limitations, have focused on acquiring young, high-potential players for low fees.

In the case of Villarreal, Barça seem convinced by the forward’s potential. Known for his pace, dribbling, and eye for goal, he has been tipped as one of the standout performers in Colombian youth football.

Barcelona will need a detailed plan

Should Barcelona push ahead with the signing, it is still unclear how they plan to incorporate him. The club could choose to add Villarreal to Barça Atletic side to help him acclimatise, or send him on loan to a European club where he could gain experience and mature.

While Villarreal’s arrival is far from confirmed, Barcelona’s continued interest signals that their recruitment department remains focused on unearthing hidden gems from South America.

And with Neyser Villarreal declining a contract extension, the door remains open, though the next move must come from the player and his entourage.
