Barcelona star Wojciech Szczęsny has admitted that, if was in the position of manager Hansi Flick, he would not introduce himself to the club’s starting XI.
Goalkeeper Szczęsny is for his part now three weeks into his spell as a Barcelona player.
Since putting pen to paper on terms in Catalunya’s capital earlier this month, however, the Pole is yet to be afforded his first appearance.
As much comes as boss Hansi Flick continues to give the nod to Iñaki Peña as his first-choice between the posts.
Speaking during an interview with Eleven Sports Poland on Thursday, the subject of his lack of minutes was in turn put to Szczęsny himself.
Specifically, the 34-year-old was asked if he is of the opinion that he should be introduced to Barca’s starting XI to face Real Madrid this weekend.
In quotes gathered by Mundo Deportivo, however, Szczęsny admitted that, if placed on the Blaugrana touchline at present, he would continue to depend upon Iñaki Peña:
“No. Iñaki Peña hasn’t given him any reason to leave him on the bench. We’ve talked a lot. I’ve already told the manager that I’m 100% fit, but the team is working well. If it’s not broken, don’t touch it.”
“If I were the coach, I wouldn’t play now either. I’ll have the opportunity to play later. Right now the team is working very well, that’s the important thing.”
