Although he signed for FC Barcelona early in October, the Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny was not able to play his first minutes in the Blaugrana shirt till the turn of the year.

He got his opportunity to play as Iñaki Peña arrived late for a pre-match talk before the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Athletic Club, and Hansi Flick penalized him by giving his starting spot to the Pole.

Since then, Szczęsny has become the clear starter for the German coach, who clearly revealed in the press conference ahead of the game against Alavés that the former Juventus goalkeeper would be the starter going forward.

Szczęsny made several mistakes in his first few games in a Barcelona shirt, however, it is becoming increasingly evident that the decision to bet on him to be the team’s starter was the correct one.

As MARCA has noted, this is particularly the case when the team’s results with Szczęsny in the goal are considered, as the Blaugranes are yet to lose with the Pole protecting their goal.

In total, Szczęsny has played 8 games this season, two in four competitions, and conceded 8 goals. A vast majority of these goals, 6, have come in the UEFA Champions League, as Benfica scored 4 past him, while Atalanta scored another 2.

He conceded 1 goal in the league game against Valencia, and another in the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid, before being expelled with a red card. So far, he has kept a clean record in the Copa del Rey, with no goal conceded against Barbastro and Valencia.

Now, after keeping clean sheets in the last two games against Deportivo Alavés and Valencia, the Pole will be looking to take his streak to three games with another clean slate in the upcoming game against Sevilla.
