Bayern Munich had to explore the transfer market for the left-back position last summer since there was uncertainty about the future of Alphonso Davies. Real Madrid had shown concrete interest in the Canadian, but Bayern never received an official bid for him.
The Bavarian club also reached an impasse over contract talks. They had a contingency plan in place if Davies left Munich in the summer. AC Milan’s Theo Hernandez was at the top of their list to replace Davies. However, the Canadian ended up staying in Munich, which made sure Bayern abandoned plans to sign a new left-back.
Bayern find themselves in a similar situation right now. Davies has improved under Vincent Kompany, but he has entered the final six months of his contract. Ahead of the summer transfer window, Bayern continue to explore left-back options in the transfer market.
According to Record in Portugal (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern are keenly following the development of Álvaro Carreras at Benfica. The former Manchester United left-back has been in fine form for the Portuguese club this season, which is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe.
Carreras has made 23 appearances for Benfica this season. He has started all six Champions League games for the Portuguese club. The Spaniard has chipped in with two goals and one assist for Benfica this season.
Carreras joined Benfica from Manchester United on a permanent deal last summer. The Red Devils reportedly have a buy-back clause inserted in the deal. With United also in the market for a left-back, Bayern may face a situation where they miss out on Carreras due to the buy-back clause by the Old Trafford side.
Theo Hernandez remains an option for Bayern. The French full-back is expected to leave AC Milan in the summer. However, he will be an expensive option than someone like Carreras in the summer.
Bayern have also been linked with Girona’s Miguel Gutiérrez in the summer. The Spaniard has been one of the best full-backs in La Liga over the last 18 months. He is also likely to be on the move when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.
