Bayern Munich have faced a significant injury blow in the heart of defense this week as Dayot Upamecano has been ruled out for at least six weeks. With Kim Min-jae also out due to an Achilles injury, Bayern will rely on the center-back partnership of Eric Dier and Hiroki Ito.
Dier has done a fine job for Die Roten in the last few weeks. After getting limited game time in the first half of the season, it looked certain that Dier would be leaving Bavaria in the summer on a free transfer.
However, Dier has managed to step up in the second half of the campaign. He has played more in Ruckrunde and delivered good performances. Bayern were reluctant to extend his stay in Munich, but the club chiefs changed their stance regarding the former Spurs defender’s future.
According to Sky Sports in Germany and Bild, Bayern are holding talks with Dier over a one-year contract extension. The contract talks could be concluded for Dier in less time since both parties are eager to reach an agreement.
There were several eyebrows raised amongst the Bavarian faithful when Bayern signed Dier from Tottenham Hotspur. Dier had struggled to get consistent game time during his last six months at Spurs. Bayern tried to sign Radu Dragusin from Genoa, but he opted for a move to Spurs over Bavaria. The Bavarian club moved swiftly and signed Dier after missing out on Dragusin.
Dier hit the ground running after arriving at Bayern. He formed a strong center-back partnership with Matthijs de Ligt under Thomas Tuchel. The English defender ended up activating the option to extend his contract by 12 months as he played several games.
Joshua Kimmich has previously praised Dier for how hard he works on the training pitch. Considering his qualities on the pitch and presence in the dressing room, it is a good move from Bayern to keep him for one more season.
The record Bundesliga champions have been linked with several young center-backs in the last six months. Despite the contract extension for Dier, Bayern are expected to sign a central defender in the summer.
Dier’s contract extension will mean that the young center-back signing will have a good amount of time to settle at the club.
Apart from Dier, Bayern are also facing a big decision regarding the future of Leroy Sane. The German winger has three months left on his contract. Sane is keen on staying in Munich, but the club chiefs are skeptical about offering a new lucrative contract.
