On matchday five of the ongoing European Champions League, Bayern Munich secured an important 1-0 win over reigning Ligue 1 champions - Paris Saint-Germain at the Allianz Arena. With the win, Bayern moved up to 11th place in the Champions League table on nine points, just one point away from the top eight and an automatic qualification spot for the knock-out phase of the competition. PSG meanwhile remained stuck on four points as they are on the brink of elimination from the competition upon completion of the group stage.
The game between PSG and Bayern was an enigma of sorts as the hosts were dominant throughout the first half. Only poor finishing and a bit of sloppy passing out from the back kept the visitors in the game. From a game that provided a lot more takeaways than goals, let us now take a look at some of the major takeaways from Bayern’s narrow, but thoroughly deserved, victory over PSG.
With the victory against PSG, Bayern won their seventh consecutive game with a clean sheet. The double-seven streak can be considered a major accomplishment. However, fans are entitled to feel especially disappointed considering that the lone goal was scored in the 38th minute and PSG were reduced to ten men for the last half-hour of the game.
Three of Bayern’s wins in the seven-game winning streak have been narrow 1-0 wins. Whilst the clean sheets are welcomed, the lack of the killer instinct in the final third warrants concern. Die Roten could eventually pay the price if the offense doesn’t match the consistency of the defense.
