Bayern Munich continued their good run of form in the Bundesliga by beating VfB Stuttgart on Friday evening. Courtesy of a 3-1 win in Stuttgart, Bayern extended their lead to 11 points at the top of the points table, albeit playing a game more than title rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
It was not a straightforward victory for Bayern, as Stuttgart had spells of domination. However, Vincent Kompany’s team showed great resolve to come back from 1-0 down to eventually make it a comfortable victory.
The only concern from the game against Stuttgart was the fitness of Alphonso Davies. The Canadian full-back came off in the second half due to a knock. Davies has recently returned from a hamstring injury. Considering how consistent he has been for Die Roten this season, it will be a big blow if he suffers another spell on the sidelines.
While talking to the media after the game, Bayern’s director of sport, Max Eberl, insisted that there is nothing to worry about Davies’ injury. Going by the words of Eberl, it looks like Davies should be fine for next week’s big Champions League game against Bayer Leverkusen.
Davies has been a vital cog in Kompany’s system at Bayern. The Canadian provides the necessary impetus in the final third without compromising the defensive duties of the left-back position. The 24-year-old has got back to his best this season after enduring an inconsistent 2023/24 campaign.
The Canadian left-back will have a big role to play against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday. The next couple of days will decide if he will be fit for the big European game.
The clash against VfB Stuttgart on Friday was the first Bundesliga game of the season missed by Joshua Kimmich. The German midfielder has started every league game this season until suffering a minor injury against Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend.
As expected, Kimmich was eager to play against Stuttgart. However, Bayern didn’t want to take risks ahead of crucial games in Europe. The German international trained at Sabner Strasse on Friday. He should be fit to start against Bayer Leverkusen. Despite the intense speculation around his future at the club, Kimmich remains a crucial player for Vincent Kompany.
Bayern are yet to defeat Bayer Leverkusen this season across three games in different competitions. It is going to be Kompany’s biggest challenge of the season to defeat Xabi Alonso’s team over the two legs to book a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
