Some interesting comments from this BBC Sport pundit on Newcastle United.
Chris Sutton speaking ahead of Saturday afternoon at St Mary’s.
Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United players looking to make it ten wins in eleven matches.
It had of course been nine wins out of nine, until Bournemouth came to St James’ Park.
It is now rock bottom Southampton who are up next for Newcastle United.
Chris Sutton talking to BBC Sport – 23 January 2025:
“All the talk before Newcastle played Bournemouth was whether Eddie Howe’s side could push Liverpool in the title race, but that talk has stopped since they lost 4-1.
“They are still right in the mix for a top-four finish, but it is important for them to quickly get back to winning ways – and this seems like a good game for them to do that.
“Southampton have made a decent fist of it in their past two games, against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, but they still ended up losing both of them.
“Let’s face it, they are as good as down. Their situation is so bad that, when we spoke about the relegation battle on this week’s Monday Night Club, we didn’t even mention them – the assumption is that they are already gone.
“Their main aim now is to avoid going down with the lowest points tally in Premier League history.
“They have got 16 games left to pick up the six points that would see them beat Derby County’s tally of 11 points from 2007-08.
“It is a big incentive because Robbie Savage, who was Derby’s captain that season, has had to live with that record for years.
“I’d really like him to keep hold of it, so let’s all pray for Southampton to reach the 12-point mark. I don’t see them picking anything up here though.
“Prediction: Southampton 0 Newcastle 2”
I find it difficult to disagree with most of that from the BBC Sport pundit.
After last weekend’s defeat to in-form Bournemouth who hadn’t lost in ten games, now playing Southampton who have won only one PL games all season and have lost ten and drawn two of their last 12. Well, Newcastle United now have to just go out and do what pretty much every other PL team has been doing to them. The Saints having lost 18 of their 22 PL matches all season.
One thing I do find amusing about Chris Sutton, is his Newcastle United title talk.
Not a single one of the many Newcastle United fans that I know, was talking about Eddie Howe’s side challenging for the title this season. Instead, the excellent run of wins had all the NUFC fans I know, talking about how it could help take us back into the Champions League.
It was all the pundits suddenly talking of could Newcastle now possibly threaten Liverpool.
BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton just one of them!
This is what he said before Newcastle lost to Bournemouth:
“No one was talking about Newcastle winning the title at the start of December, but now they just need to hang on in there. I don’t think it is going to happen but they have an outside chance.”
Obviously if a team keeps winning all its games then anything could happen BUT that isn’t the reality. As Newcastle fans we all knew that there would be downs as well as ups in the rest of this season’s matches.
I always find it laughable/frustrating, that this kind of thing happens, such as loads of pundits talk about Newcastle maybe now getting into the title race. Then when NUFC fall away, these same pundits and others, will then go on as if it was most Newcastle United fans who had been claiming whatever AND then ourselves (the fans) getting ridiculed for it, when it wasn’t us who had been talking it up!
