The Bernabeu faithful were let down once again by a star studded Real Madrid squad, who succumbed to their second Champions League loss this season. Very few positives and many negatives to take out from this game.
The following ratings reflect how Real Madrid fared against AC Milan.
Player ratings:
Andriy Lunin: 6.0
If your goalkeeper is your best player on the night especially after conceding three, things are really bad. Made some exceptional saves, including a header at full stretch by Rafael Leao. If not for him, the scoreline would have been more lopsided.
Lucas Vazquez: 2.0
As expected, was not able to put up with the pace, technique and precision of Leao and Theo Hernandez on the left wing. They ran the Spaniard ragged throughout the game – especially for the third goal. Surprised that Carlo Ancelotti has continued to start Vazquez despite a string of abysmal performances.
Eder Militao: 5.0
The Brazilian could have done better from the set piece to prevent Thiaw’s header from ending up in the back of the net. Completely outclassed for the third goal due to his rookie-style positioning.
Antonio Rüdiger: 5.5
Was too eager to make challenges and win duels, which eventually led to the third goal. Could not have done much for the initial two goals. Caught slightly offside otherwise the comeback would have been on with his wonderful shot. This defensive pairing really needs to work on their communication as they don’t look like a cohesive unit at all.
Ferland Mendy: 2.0
Only god knows what has happened to the left-back, who was once termed as the ‘best defensive full-back’ in the world. Former Valencia player, Yunus Musah completely tore him apart. No offensive presence as always. Abysmal to say the least.
Aurelien Tchouaméni: 4.5
Looked decent in the initial few minutes and had a good spell of play. But it completely changed since it was his misplaced ball which led to Milan’s second goal. Was unable to keep track of his marker and was gladly taken off at half-time.
Fede Valverde: 4.5
Things look really bad if Valverde is not performing well. Ancelotti confirmed he suffered a knock (reportedly, in his back) and was taken off quickly. Left the opponents attackers a lot of space and looked fatigued. Hopefully, he gets a rest in the next match.
Luka Modric: 5.5
No offence to his stature as a player, but the Croatian should have started the game on the Real Madrid bench as he has been more useful later on in matches. Was easily bypassed in Milan’s midfield. But also looked like the only person capable of some chance out of nowhere.
Jude Bellingham: 6.5
Another game, another positive performance for the Englishman. Was covering Vazquez’ flank a few times and made runs inside the box – instead of the striker himself. Did most of the hard work and again, not the best use of his skills. Ancelotti to be blamed for this since Jude himself is putting in performance after performance despite not being in his preferable position.
Vinícius Júnior: 6.5
Earned a penalty and scored it. Other than that, surprised that he did not take advantage of his battle against Emerson Royal. Missed a point blank header which he should have buried. He did vow to do things 10x better but this game was not an example of it.
Kylian Mbappe: 6.0
Better display from the last game undoubtedly. But lacked the killer instinct as he took as many as 8 shots and 3 shots on target, which were saved by Maignan. Needs to find ways of scoring quickly.
Substitutes:
Eduardo Camavinga: 6.0
Once again, did decent in his 45-minute cameo. Added that extra energy in midfield for Real Madrid. But again played a part in the third goal.
Brahim Díaz: 5.0
Not his best outing and he could do so since he was very little match time and is expected to perform from the get-go. Also was denied a goal by Maignan in additional time
Dani Ceballos: 5.0
Surprised to see him play 28 minutes and other than keeping the ball at his feet, was creatively quite poor.
Fran García: 5.5
Deserves a few chances as the season progresses. Almost recorded an assist but Vini headed his ball wide.
Rodrygo: 5.5
Should have been brought on earlier or even started for one less midfielder.
