Borussia Dortmund are reportedly still “trying to sign Marcus Rashford” despite any move for the Manchester United forward posing a “very complicated situation” for the Bundesliga club financially.
A host of teams across Europe are vying to sign Rashford in the January transfer window after the 27-year-old publicly declared his desire to depart Old Trafford last month, revealing he wished to experience a “new challenge”.
Rashford has not featured for the Red Devils since that blockbuster interview with Ruben Amorim openly questioning the decision-making from the Englishman and his camp, having dropped the forward for the Manchester Derby.
The interview, which the club was unaware of, came just three days after the dramatic 2-1 win at the Eithad.
United are open to Rashford’s exit this month, though any deal will almost certainly be a loan move with the 27-year-old’s stock at an all time low following eighteen months of dismal form in a red shirt.
Rashford’s exorbitant wage packet – believed to be in excess of £300,000 a week – is a further obstacle to potential suitors.
Few clubs outside of Saudi Arabia would be willing to pay anywhere close to that salary, including Dortmund. And it was for this reason that the German side had appeared to rule out an approach for Rashford.
However, Florian Plettenberg (Sky Sports Germany) reveals Die Schwarzgelben remain in the hunt for the United star with a potential move having “gained momentum in recent days”.
Tweet: “As exclusively revealed this week: Borussia Dortmund are trying to sign Marcus #Rashford…as the topic has gained momentum in recent days, especially after the defeat on Friday. It’s a very complicated situation. AC Milan are determined to sign Rashford, but #BVB are also in the race.”
Dortmund are enduring a tough season with Nuri Sahin’s side currently languished in 10th place in the Bundesliga table.
Disappointing back-to-back losses over the last four days, including a 3-2 loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen, have ramped up the pressure on Sahin, with former United manager Erik ten Hag in attendance for the defeat, fuelling rumours he may be set to take over at Dortmund.
And whole Ten Hag and Rashford did not always enjoy the best of relationships, the best form of the 27-year-old attacker’s career undoubtedly came under the Dutchman during their shared time at Old Trafford.
Furthermore, German football expert Christian Falk contends Chelsea are “in talks to sign” Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi, while Napoli are also interested in a move for the 22-year-old this month.
This combination of a forward potentially leaving Signal Iduna Park and Rashford’s former manager arriving could be the spark which means Dortmund intensify efforts to strike a deal with United ahead of European competitors AC Milan and Barcelona.
