The scenario: If they win in Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund (currently 10th in the table) will move to within a point of Sportclub, who occupy seventh place. The 2-1 defeat against Union Berlin last weekend marked the end of Freiburg’s seven-match unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga. Suddenly, the men from the Breisgau are now winless in four rounds of matches (three draws and one defeat).

Home/away: Freiburg have already picked up more points on home turf (26) than they did in the entirety of last season (22). There have been three victories, one draw and two defeats at their own stadium in the 2025 calendar year. Across the entire season, only two teams have won at home more often than Freiburg (eight home victories). BVB have won four of their six away matches across all competitions since February – two of them in the league (in Heidenheim and away to FC St. Pauli).

Head-to-head record: SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund are set for their 50th meeting in the Bundesliga and their 25th in the Breisgau. Sportclub have only managed to claim victory in five of their 49 clashes. Since the Breisgau outfit were first promoted in 1993, BVB have only won more games (34) and scored more goals (119) against Wolfsburg than they have against Freiburg (33 and 117). The Black & Yellows have won their last six meetings; they do not have a longer such run against any other Bundesliga opponent. BVB also recorded their longest-ever winning streak against Freiburg: there were 12 successive victories between 2010 and 2017.

Statistics: Freiburg have 42 points on the board – that’s six more than a year ago (36) – and have already won more often (12 victories) than they did in the entirety of the 2023/24 season (11). However, the team are without a win in four rounds of matches. Their most recent victory was by a 5-0 scoreline against Bremen on 21 February. Borussia have not lost any of their last 10 league matches in which they opened the scoring at 1-0.

Reverse fixture: BVB were more clinical in that 4-0 victory than in any other game this season, scoring four goals from an xG of 1.3. But the scoreline was also highly deserved given the shot count of 20-7. Beier (7), Nmecha (40), Brandt (66) and Gittens (77) scored the goals. Freiburg have not suffered a heavier loss this term.

Last season: Hummels fired the visitors in front in the 11th minute, but two quickfire goals from Höler (47) and Höfler (51) put Freiburg 2-1 up and meant they looked like the likelier victors. But then Höfler’s red card for a rough challenge on Sabitzer saw the game take another turn (82). Malen had already scored to make it 2-2 (60), before Hummels netted his second goal (88) – becoming the oldest brace-scorer in Dortmund’s Bundesliga history – and Reus added another in stoppage time to score the second goal since the dismissal and seal a 4-2 victory.
