It was a rare late show for Arne Slot’s side as Liverpool picked up a hugely momentum-building win over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium thanks to late Darwin Nunez heroics.

Despite enjoying near-total dominance over the hosts in West London, The Reds were struggling to convert possession, territory and chances into goals before the much-maligned Uruguayan fired home twice in quick succession.

Slot’s side have moved all too serenely to their position of strength this season for many, so this drama-filled, heart-attack-inducing win was more of a throwback to title race experiences of old.

Seemingly heading towards a disappointing stalemate after Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo and the excellent Dominik Szoboszlai had all come close, it was Nunez to the rescue as the 25-year-old found himself at the right place at the right time to break the deadlock beyond the 90-minute mark, call it having that natural striker’s instinct.

Just moments later, when most of us were still trying to calm down from the euphoria that had gone before, the divisive frontman had doubled the lead, this time with a wonderful touch and finish having received the ball from Harvey Elliott inside the area.

Whilst Nunez will rightly draw the majority of the headlines, Elliott’s impact, along with Federico Chiesa shouldn’t go unnoticed as Slot’s charges moved six points clear over the weekend thanks to a comeback from Aston Villa against Arsenal.

Redmen Reacts

Well well well. Just when we were righting him off he comes back to make us all look foolish.

There can be little doubt that question marks remain over Nunez’s long-term suitability at Anfield under Slot, however, between now and the end of the season there is clearly space in the squad and a role to play.

Diaz’s experiment as the number nine has worked, until a point, but, that more conventional striker occupies the area in a different way, moves in a different way, and for now whilst Diogo Jota is sidelined, Nunez might just be the only way.
