It was a mediocre display at Anfield as Liverpool – rather comfortably – emerged victorious against Real Madrid.
Very few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing performance from the Merengues.
Here is how the Real Madrid players fared against Liverpool.
Player ratings:
Thibaut Courtois: 7.0
Conceded twice but the five saves he made from inside the box meant that Ancelotti’s side was staring at an embarrassing defeat. The Belgian could have done better on the first goal though but the second goal was too difficult even by his standards.
Fede Valverde: 7.0
A decent outing for the Uruguayan who kept his fellow South American Luis Diaz quiet throughout the match. Made crucial interceptions and tackles too. Most probably will return to the midfield from the next game with Lucas Vazquez returning.
Raul Asencio: 7.0
Made a goal line clearance and also made some really eye catching tackles, including catching up to Darwin Nunez and making a solid tackle. The Real Madrid youngster would be gutted to be on the losing side considering the effort he put in.
Antonio Rüdiger: 6.5
A rare bad day for the German. Should have prevented Mac Allister from taking the shot for the first goal and also should have marked Cody Gakpo from the set piece. But also made some crucial interventions and dealt effectively what came his way.
Ferland Mendy: 5.0
Did well against Mo Salah in the initial few minutes but soon after lost the plot. Was caught out of position couple of times and made a reckless challenge to concede a penalty. Not the return he would have wanted.
Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5
Another good game for the Frenchman who extends his purple patch. Did exceptionally well while being pressed and performed well as a box to box midfielder. Defensive workrate was solid as well. Gutted to have him injured yet again for 2-3 weeks.
Luka Modric: 6.5
Had a good opening half and helped the defence too. But his age showed in the second half and was unable to put up against a well-drilled Liverpool side. Would have hoped for a better outing but at this age, cannot do much. Anfield gave the Real Madrid veteran a standing ovation in a class act.
Jude Bellingham: 7.0
Yet another game where he was not given the freedom to fully showcase his skills. Positioned in a much more defensive position, he did well at what he was asked. Won 5 duels and created 2 big chances.
Arda Güler: 6.0
The pressure got to the youngster, who struggled to cope with the intensity of the game. Decision-making was questionable but still tried hard. But his time will definitely come.
Brahim Díaz: 6.5
Played in a relatively new position, and despite that, looked good on the ball at times and his dribbling was a treat to watch. The decision-making could have been better though.
Kylian Mbappe: 2.0
Managed to pull off an even worse performance as compared to the game against FC Barcelona but at least in that game he scored a few times and the goals were ruled offside. In this match, nothing went his way at all.
Despite playing in a favourable position, Conor Bradley kept the Frenchman in his pocket. When he got a chance to salvage himself, did not convert the penalty. Defensive workrate was near invisible. This game could have been his chance to show why he was bought. But the World Cup winner failed – and failed badly on a European night.
Substitutes:
Lucas Vazquez: 6.0
It was surprising to see him come on in the first place since the team was down but still, earned the penalty. That was his only contribution to the match.
Dani Ceballos: 6.5
Continued from where he left off against Leganes. Circulated possession well, worked tirelessly off the ball and held his ground. A rare bright spot on a poor night.
Fran García: 6.5
Probably should have started the game since he has been better than Mendy so far. This game also was proof as he kept a player of Salah’s calibre quiet for the final 20 minutes, and offensively also put a few crosses in.
Endrick: N/A
Despite playing 11 minutes, had only three touches which is insufficient to warrant a rating. Should have been brought on earlier though.
