We took a look at how the net worth of Vincent Tan compares to the Premier League's richest owners

Vincent Tan has become one of English football's most well known owners thanks to his 14-year spell at Cardiff City, where it's fair to say that he's done some controversial things.

In the summer of 2012, Tan changed the club's colour and badge from blue to red, a hugely controversial decision, not least because the club's nickname is the Bluebirds, and that's perhaps just the tip of the iceberg.

The Malaysian businessman once asked why goalkeeper David Marshall wasn't scoring any goals, sacked head of recruitment Iain Moody and replaced him with 23-year-old Alisher Apsalyamov, whose only previous experience at the club was painting the walls at the stadium, and once told the club's board he wanted to sign players who have the number eight in their birthdate.

Tan has been a real divisive figure at the Cardiff City Stadium, and despite some of his crazy antics, he's bankrolled the club and led them to the Premier League on two occasions.

There's no denying that he's a wealthy man, so with that in mind, here is how Tan's net worth compares to the richest Premier League owners.

According to Forbes, Tan's net worth in 2024 is $730m, which equates to £552million.

Tan's has seen his net worth decrease significantly in recent seasons, and at his peak, the Cardiff City owner had a net worth of a whopping $1.6billion, which works out as roughly £1.2billion.

The 72-year-old made his fortune through investing in Malyasia's first McDonald's franchise at the age of 28, before becoming the managing director of the company in his homeland.

He then turned his attention to Berjaya Corporation, where he bought a stake in the company, before purchasing 51% of Sports Toto, swapping the two shares for a controlling stake in Berjaya, and with the wealth he accumulated at Berjaya, he purchased Cardiff City, spending £6million to acquire a 35% stake, and has invested more than £200million of his money into the club.

Tan has seen his net worth decrease, and attributed a lot of that to Cardiff City, as he stated in an interview with Wales Online in November 2022.

Despite seeing his net worth decrease, Tan is still a wealthy man, so let's compare his worth to those of the Premier League's richest owners.

Tan's net worth of £552million is put into perspective when you read the wealth of some of the Premier League's richest owners.

In fact, Tan's net worth is greater than just two of the Premier League's existing owners, and he'd sit above Nottingham Forest's Evangelos Marinakis, who has a net worth of £479million, and Brentford's Matthew Benham, who has a net worth of just £216.3million, according to Give Me Sport.

The Premier League's richest owners come in the form of Newcastle United and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, who possess a net worth of £478billion, putting Tan's into stark comparison.

18 of the current Premier League clubs have owners with a net worth of over £1billion, and if Cardiff were a Premier League side, Tan's net worth would be one of the smallest in the division.

While Newcastle United are way out in front with a net worth of £478billion, they are followed by the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa, who have a net worth of £19.2billion and £13.8billion respectively.

These numbers perhaps show just how far behind Tan is in terms of net worth, despite being objectively a very wealthy man.

Despite this, Tan will be looking to lead the Bluebirds back to the Premier League again in the near future in a bid to earn back some of the money he's lost over the years.
