Chelsea have provided an injury update on Wesley Fofana ahead of their Premier League clash with Brentford on Sunday.
The centre-back has not featured for the Blues since being subbed off late in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 16 March.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca revealed earlier this week that the France international had sustained a muscle injury which would require further assessment by specialists.
That assessment has confirmed the west London outfit’s worst fears as the club disclosed that Fofana has undergone surgery on his hamstring, likely ruling him out for the rest of the season.
“The 24-year-old will now begin his recovery and undergo rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham over the coming weeks,” a club statement read.
Fofana has struggled with a number of injuries since becoming a Premier League player with Leicester City, whom he joined from Saint-Etienne in 2020.
The Foxes sold Fofana to Chelsea for a reported £70 million plus £5m in add-ons in August 2022, but he has only made 34 appearances in all competitions in the three seasons since making the move.
He suffered a major knee injury just two months after signing, which kept him until February of the following year. In July 2023 it was revealed that he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury, ruling him out for the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.
Fofana has started 14 times in the Premier League this term, but has not featured in the Uefa Europa Conference League or either of the domestic cup competitions.
