Chelsea join race for Liverpool-linked Serie A defender | OneFootball

Chelsea are the latest side to express an interest in signing Bologna centre-back Sam Beukema, reports in Italy claim.

The 26-year-old joined Bologna from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2023 and has dazzled during his time in Italy, with his defensive prowess earning plenty of praise as Bologna eye a spot in next season's Champions League.

A 2-1 win over AC Milan late last month featured another impressive performance from Beukema andI Italian publication Gianluca Di Marzio reports that scouts from Chelsea were in the stands to watch the Dutchman in action.

Chelsea are known to be planning to reinforce in defence this summer. Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo and Trevoh Chalobah all face uncertain futures in Enzo Maresca's side, while Wesley Fofana continues his battle to prove himself after a long spell on the sidelines through injury.

Beukema's performances have attracted plenty of admirers, including both Atletico Madrid and Juventus, while reports in Italy have named Liverpool as potential suitors. Reds boss Arne Slot is on record admitting his desire to sign Beukema during his time as Feyenoord manager.

A switch to England would appeal to Beukema, who has previously admitted his soft spot for West Ham United would not stop him joining another Premier League side.

"I also have ambitions and I hope one day I can play maybe in the Premier League or another big club," he told inews in October 2024 when quizzed about links to Liverpool.

"I used to support West Ham. I visited Upton Park once with my father. I was really impressed, because the atmosphere was similar to Feyenoord or Go Ahead Eagles. But, of course, there are so many amazing teams in England, so if another nice club like Liverpool came along I'm happy to go there one day."
