Chelsea and Manchester United go head-to-head in the Premier League on Friday 16th May at 8:15pm. The match will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League. Find out match preview and best bets from expert tipster Anthony Eadson below.
At 4/11, the hosts look incredibly short in the standard match result market. There is no denying that motivation is a huge factor here, with Chelsea gunning for a place in the Champions League next season through finishing in the top-5, while United have their sights firmly set on the Europa League final in Bilbao next week. Ruben Amorim’s side have been poor in the league, but it’s worth noting that they have scored in all of their last five away from Old Trafford across all formats, and looking back a bit further, in eight of their last nine. Amroim may decide to rest some of his key players and Chelsea should have the edge in what could be a high-scoring contest.
There is no denying that Chelsea need to pick up a result on Friday, with a tricky trip to Nottingham Forest on the cards on the last day of the campaign. I expect to see Chelsea throwing everything at this game and the player I’m targeting to pick up a card is Levi Colwill. Only Moises Caicedo has been shown more cards for Chelsea in the league this season than Colwill, who has nine to his name in just 33 appearances. Three of those cards have arrived in his last eight outings, and at 11/2 he looks overpriced in a game with such significance in the race for the Champions League places.
After a serious wobble, Chelsea is still well in the hunt for Champions League qualification. The Blues recently thrashed Djurgarden 1-4 away in the first leg of their Conference League semi-final clash, before a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge booked their place in the final. Those results came amid Premier League wins against Fulham, Everton, and newly crowned champions Liverpool. However, after their defeat to Newcastle last Sunday, they sit fifth in the league, level on points with Aston Villa in sixth.
As for Manchester United, their sole focus is now on the Europa League. The Red Devils beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the first leg of their semi-final, before a commanding 4-1 victory at Old Trafford the week after. West Ham then beat Ruben Amorim’s men in Manchester last weekend, and the table does not make for pretty reading with United sitting all the way down in 16th.
Wesley Fofana is out for the season, but Chelsea will hope to have Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu available for this match.
Ayden Heaven, Diogo Dalot, Matthijs de Ligt and Toby Collyer could all return against Chelsea. However, Man Utd will be without Joshua Zirkzee and Lisandro Martinez for the rest of the season.
The last nine meetings between these sides have either been won by the home side or ended in a draw. It was a 1-1 stalemate at Old Trafford earlier this season, with a Bruno Fernandes penalty cancelled out by Moises Caicedo.
