City’s Elite Development Squad have sealed a first position finish in the Premier League 2 league standings ahead of the playoff stage of the restructured competition.
It is the first time our Under-21s have topped the new format since its change prior to the 2023/24 campaign.
Finishing top of the PL2 table also confirms our potential route to the PL2 playoff final, which would include a Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final should City reach the showpiece occasion in May.
Monday night’s 4-0 triumph over Newcastle saw us beat the Magpies in our final game of the first stage of the competition. A Cathal Heffernan own goal put City ahead before Justin Oboavwoduo and a Divin Mubama brace confirmed victory at the Joie Stadium.
The three points moved us two points clear of Fulham, meaning our lead over the Cottagers is now unassailable.
It was City’s 15th league win in what has been an impressive campaign for our Under-21s with a remarkable 61 goals scored and 23 conceded.
Ben Wilkinson’s side will now have time to regroup and begin preparations for our Round of 16 game which will be played on the weekend of 25/26 April.
Confirmation of our opponents will follow later this week, with Gameweek 20 set to be completed on Friday 18 April.
Details on our first knockout stage game, date and kick-off time will be verified on mancity.com and the Official Man City App in due course.
